Ang Thong National Marine Park

Comprising of 42 or more islands and occupying a little over 100 square kilometers, the protected Ang Thong National Marine Park is a stunning archipelago located only an hour (by speedboat) Northwest of Koh Samui.  As you can imagine, 42 islands is a bit too much to cover on a single day-tour, so for this trip, you will explore a sample of three islands – Wao Island, Mae Kho Island and Tai Phow Island.

AngThong Marine Park

Your first stop will see you travel to the northern reach of the marine park, and a visit to Koh Wao Island.  With most of the area dominated by hard corals, here in this sheltered bay, delicate, soft coral gardens can be found; making this the perfect place to start the days snorkeling.  Swimming through the crystal clear, shallow waters, home to a vast array of tropical fish, you may catch glimpses of the Angelfish, Butterfly Fish or even the brightly colored Parrot Fish.

From here, we will visit Mae Kho Island, known for its spectacular island lake and lush jungle.  Take advantage of the opportunity to hike to the top of the island, where you can savor the sweeping views of both the surrounding marine park and the lake that is believed to be the inspiration behind Alex Garland’s ‘The Beach’.  After your trek, you will want to end your visit to Mae Kho with a dip in the cool waters, and perhaps a look back at the island to see if you can spot one of their resident iguanas or ground lizards!  This is also an area where Green Turtles are known to frequent, so make sure to keep an eye out for them too.

Gaze upwards towards the eerie, jagged, limestone cliffs overhanging the water here at Tai Phow Island, our next stop.  Your tour guide will share stories and insider knowledge about the park, its inhabitants and history as you kayak through hidden caves and lagoons.  These incredible Karst Limestone caves are formed when mildly acidic water filters through the cracks, dissolving the limestone as it goes.  This takes thousands of years and results in the beautiful Karst topography that can be found in the Ang Thong National Park and features heavily on Tai Phow Island.

After a full day of snorkeling, hiking and kayaking, re-board the speedboat and relax with some cool drinks whilst enjoying the relaxing ride back to Koh Samui.
